Let’s face it, the last season of Game of Thrones threw everyone off and divided opinions as much as politics in America has. It was doing so well since season 1 to season 7 building into 1 of the best TV and most controversial TV series in histroy of TV, then season 8 happened.Ā It got so bad that getting petitions done to remake season 8.
Though it had some saving graces but it just did not live up to its hype of previous seasons you can read my review of episode 3 here and the finale here. What went wrong? How did they blow such an epic series? Let’s look at the Top 10 reasons that GoT failed viewers.

10. Careless Placements…
Let’s start with most obvious… When you finishing off your masterpiece you really do not want to spill coffee on it or accidentally sneeze at it.
That is exactly what the cast does. During filming a Starbucks coffee cup was found during 1 of the scenes and that prompted waves of memes just because of this. Ha ha, right…?
And It happens again, during the gathering of nobles to scoff at democracy… a water bottle was left blow one of the seats. Like come on… and some how they missed it again. It is either that or Westeros is getting gentrified.
One would wonder for a series that costs around US$ 15 million/- per episode that the cast would be more perceptive to this. That carries on to the next foopah…
9. Just Rush It!
Kudos to the writers fitting the book into the series that is Game of Thrones, but tying up a story into 1 last season does not fit intoĀ that criteria. In season 8 it felt that producers were just trying to cram as much into the episodes as possible, so bad that it felt really rushed.
It is worth noting since the get-go of Episode 1: Jon gets to ride the dragon Rhaegal, which is suppose to be significant, right? But halfway through the episode before we can even savour it, Jon gets reunited with Arya & Bran, Theon manages to save his sister, the Golden company arrives on Westeros, Ned Umber (I almost forgot who) gets turned into a Wight, Jaime goes to Winterfell unannounced and has a stare-off with Bran, and Jon learns that he is Aegon Targaryen (next heir to the throne and Dany’s nephew).
Compared to the other season for example, Dany getting to ride Drgon in Astapoor when the Harpies attacked. It was significant. The seasons with filled with intensive build ups to those situations, heavy dialogue and not as action packed to make it all important. That goes to sh%$…
8. Anti-Climatic Situations too hard to Swallow…
They were putting everything into each of these characters and it came to nothing by putting down so fast no plomp and making other half of GoT feeling cheated. Situations such as
The Night Kings Demise in Winterfell
The most touted battle of the ages was to be the one in Winterfell. The battle suppose to be the longest on film and the Night King the biggest villain ever with no weaknesses and being death incarnate. Well, that was done mid-way through. Though I feel that Arya getting the kill was okay, but it could of been more. It was over too fast. Where’s the sword-fight with The Night King? Where were the Wight Commanders in the battle? Just huddling for a hustle I suppose. For all the super build-up, The Night King died by sleight of hand. Other problems being…
Jaime & Cersei’s Deaths
The plot always hinted that the sibling lover’s deaths would end in betrayal and murder. That was what Cersei’s frog prophecy was about. But in the end they died by falling rocks during Dany’s rampage on the Red Keep.
Jon back on Night Duty…
Jon had a great storyline being Aegon Targaryn, First of the Name, Ruler of the Seven Kingdoms, well that could have been a great story instead he goes back to the Night’s Watch going wargling with the Wildlings.
Dothraki & Unsullied Just Leave…
After their Queen gets killed they do not do much just pack-up and leave. Not to mention weren’t the Dothraki all killed?
Arya’s Skills
Arya did use her skills to kill the Night King but that was it, no killing of Cersei as we were anticipating. The only 1 time Arya put her faceless man’s training into action was to kill off the Freys. It would have been good to see it 1 more time.
7. Destroying CharacterĀ Development
Another part that the writers really pushed it was the jarring character development. It got so bad that it left viewers shocked confused or even angry. Some might believe that this handled long ago in Season 5 where they deviated from the book. Though, Season 8 got the biggest backlash yet from everyone.
All the characters were painted so well taking time and heart into each of that and it just took a sudden turn within the next 6 episodes. More so for some like:
Jaime Lannister the Kingslayer, from being the more hated character that first came in at Season 1, we learnt to really like him through his selfless acts and his noble deeds. His hand being cut off being a symbol of that change. That culminated to Jaime leaving King’s Landing and joing the fight in Winterfell against the Whitewalkers. Then he goes and leaves again, leaving Brienne ofĀ Tarth, someone who he has grown to love/ admire in the previous seasons to go back to Cersei. Which then culminated in him getting hit by bricks. Not so noble and getting us to yearn for more to him than that.
Even Jon Snow, developing him into the son of Rhaegar Targaryn and Lyanna Stark, being born of Fire & Ice, heir to the throne it was built up for us to anticipate more. Instead it was partly used to justify Dany’s decent to madness. That was it. Some would even argue, that Jon Snow, who has wouldn’t take a false oath to Cersei for the good of the Seven Kingdoms, took time to Wildings and Nights Watch to work together, just not put more effort to help Dany? Maybe more persuasion, maybe shout out, instead of just a stab. Left us wanting more.
Then Danaerys, someone for 7 seasons we as the viewers have learned to admire or love, building her into a character people can look up to. Broken within 3 episodes, leaving some of us feel betrayed and astonished. Even is she had to become the villain, we didn’t get to see much in her descent, maybe just a few baggy eyes. Then just killing innocent people in Kings Landing after the bells rang, in sharp contrast to freeing the people in Quarth (klling the nobles, even then she tried to agree to terms amicably first), is it really something she would do? We were shocked.
Leads to plotholes…
6. Plotholes as much as Swiss Cheese
So a good story should leave us with a feel good attitude, content and tying up all the ends, right? This how Season 8 just kept me thinking:
About Bran becoming King, it was a good twist and I sort of liked it? Though the way it played out felt rushed and hard to persuade us, especially since we had a more obvious choice.
Tyrion likes stories. Who had a better story Bran? How about Jon Snow? The Targeryn heritage, being resurrected, bringing peace to the Watch. How about Arya? Who was the MVP for killing the Night King and saving the Seven Kingdoms.
No one cared about Jon Snow, just throw him back to Night’s Watch. Wait why throw him back? Do they even need the Watch anymore after the defeat of the Night Walkers and Wildings living in harmony with the Kingdoms. To quell the Unsullied and Dothraki, it didn’t make any sense ith they were leaving for Naath and never came back. Even for Yara, wouldn’t letting her know of Jon’s heritage help to persuade her. Instead bon voyage everyone.
How about Bran the Three Eyed Raven? The same guy who no one battered a eyelid for and just stood there emotionless for the other seasons, just be king. Even after refusing to be Lord of Winterfell? The Last Three-Eyed Raven, lived in a tree for thousands of years.
How did the Prince of Dorne come to be? Especially since Dorne played a big part in the lore, we have no idea how did he gain power, what happened to them during then. That brings us to another question…
5. Lost Characters
During season 8, we see how some characters were just left without anything else to fulfill. Some of them being:
Ellaria of the Sand: We never seen or heard from her again. Is she still watching her daughter dying?
Daario Naharis: Dany’s former lover, who was left to ruler Mereen. Don’t know what happened to him.
Jaqen H’ghar: End of season 6, he left for Westeros. The Face;ess Man who made such an impact on Arya, never heard from again.
4. Cringe-worthy Villain Changes
Since the Season 1 of GoT, we were built to hate or respect some of the villains. It took time and gave us enough reason to see why they got their comeuppence. Though this all changed from Season 8.
It seemed like to fill the Season Finale the writers wanted to just change villains from Night King to Cersei to Dany and tie it up. Though the jarring changes left us out of breath and just underwhelming other villains.
3. Unrealistic Events
We knew that the GoT was a realm of Giants, Witches and Dragons. Though there was just too much that defied the rules of logic it became hard for us to swallow.
We knew Arya was a skillled assasin but her instant teleportation and super wall scaling to kill the Night King was hard for some to believe.
Dany and Drogon, just turn-tailed and ran from the ambush. When they came back they destroyed the ships. Couldn’t they had done that then? Doesn’t flying give you a good line of sight. Couldn’t they have seen the ambush from far away?
Viserion could burn wall on East Watch which stood for thousands of years but Drogon’s fire couldn’t damage the wall Jon was behind, seriously? Drogon seems to be into symbolisms too. Left us wanting answers.
Why did we not see Bran’s powers in more use in the final season? It was alluded he could Warge a Dragon but all he did was just be bait for the Night King. We did not see much of him using his powers to the best extent.
2. Character Deaths (all Hail The Plot Armour)
Since Season 1 we expected to some main characters die unpredictably and we were expecting an artistic massacre for the finale season. Just think about it…
During the battle of Winterfell, it did not really feel that Tyrion, Jaime, Sansa, Dany or Jon were in real danger as their stories still had to play out. It just lost that sense of unpredictability that it used to have.
Or how some main characters died. Dany’s death was just underwhelming with no build up and also Cersei & Jaime dying by hit from bricks. It left us without anything to get out of it accept… geez they dead… next.
1. Continuity Mistakes…
It was obivious… apart from the coffee cup and bottle water debacle.
Some of the events during the scenes were just too easy to catch, some noticed how the scenes crom King’s Landing changed dramatically for few parts of the season.
Some noticed Dany’s hair changed on the ship coming to King’s Landing since Season 8 Episode 1.
Then how did Greyworm get to Dany faster than Jon if he was still there slitting throats in the final episode.
Some of it just did not make sense…
What Do You Think?
